Barron's Bytes By Val Barron

Lousy Weather

If our editor proofreads my column before publication he will not like the term “lousy”. He might change it to something like “Cloudy Weather With a Chance of Rain”. He would of course be in good company. Neither the Chicago Manual of Style, The New York Times Style Manual, nor even The Associated Press Manual of Style would permit a headline saying “Lousy Weather”. Having observed all of this I must say that here in Houston we sure have been having some Lousy Weather.

The reason I mention this is because the great thing about lousy weather is that it gives us ample time to stay indoors and learn more about our computers and the World Wide Web. With that in mind I’ll offer up a few tips that I hope you find worthwhile.

I Been Searchin

Seems to me that was the name of a rock and roll song from the ‘50’s but I can’t remember who sang it. I do however know who is responsible for the best Searchin’ advice that I have recently come across. That would be Ellen Chamberlain, Head Librarian at the University of South Carolina Beaufort campus. She has written Bare Bones 101: A Basic Tutorial on Searching the Web. You may find this a bit academic or it may tell you more about searching than you think you need to know. But if you are like me you spend a fair amount of time searching the web. The more you know about searching the easier and more successful your searches will be. So click on this link and spend some time with Bare Bones 101. If you find clicking on the link doesn’t work for you just copy and paste the following URL into your browser: http://www.sc.edu/beaufort/library/bones.html .

Home Page

Each of us has a “Home Page” on our computer. The home page is the page we go to when we open Internet Explorer or whatever browser we use. Some of us stick with the one that comes with our computer, perhaps MSN.com, or if we have AOL, that gives us AOL.com as our default home page. Some of us like Yahoo or CEO Express. Many of us use the home page of our club. A few of us build our own home page with Microsoft Word.

From time to time I’d like to offer up a page for you to consider as your home page. Some pages will be “Portals” some will be “News” type pages that you might personalize for local weather. There are literally millions of pages on the web that you might find useful as a home page. Your home page should be the one page on the web that you find most useful for your own use and that may well change from time to time. The page I offer today is INFO321 at http://www.info321.com/. This site is basically a Portal but with a difference. Things I like about this site. First, it is free. Second, it has a great tutorial, just click on Site Demo in the header of the page then click on Next after you read each new topic. Another plus is that you can add your own links and customize it in many ways. It has a capacity of several hundred personal links. There are many other things to like about but I’m sure you’ll discover many things to like here.

Things I don’t like about this site. My only real complaint is that the typography and layout seem rather crude after I have used CEO Express for many years as my Home Page. However, at the bottom of their pages is a link called “Contact Us” where you can send an e-mail to the Webmaster. I’m sure you’ll find other things to like or dislike here but I think it is a worthy candidate for your consideration as a Home Page.

Happy computing,

Val Barron
