Glad to Be Back

Your Columnist was certainly glad to be back at Bentsen Grove for the computer meeting on the third of March. I have spent too many weeks away this winter.

At the meeting we discussed a number of things that I will try to quickly summarize in no particular order.

Aces Online Quizzes is an interesting site with dozens of entertaining quizzes at http://copydesk.org/quizzes.htm. Have fun trying your hand at some of these when you have an idle moment.

Bare Bones 101:  This University of South Carolina has excellent basic information on using search engines at http://www.sc.edu/beaufort/library/bones.html. One of the terrific features on this site is that Lesson 17 includes links to over a dozen other sites with useful web search information.

Icon Restore is another site that was briefly mentioned was Icon Restore at

http://home.epix.net/~ttaylor/icon_restore.html.

Consumer Search Product Reviews was also briefly mentioned at http://www.consumersearch.com/www/.

MSCONFIG was discussed and an informative website shown http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/.

Belarc Advisor:  This site provides a very useful download that will tell you amazing things about your computer. Many of us print these outputs for future reference. Find Belarc Advisor at http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html.

Next Week

So much for the March 3rd meeting how about next week. I plan to discuss a free program that lets you easily backup all of your windows drivers, Days In History, a useful information portal and as many other things as time permits..

Happy computing, Val

Last weeks New Users Lesson, By Corinne Higbee

Last Monday we looked at some sites and one I gave you will work best with the Netscape browser. It is not recommended for AOL users. That site is www.privoxy.org  It is a free download for stopping popups and banners. It has web protection for privacy. Usually it is used with the mozilla site application of Netscape.

For all users we looked at a site for a pay program that will burn all CD's, DVD's and MP3's. This program is simple to use and cost $49.00. You can get a trial usage for one day free.

The site is www.nero.com/en/index.html#root

A web site that you might enjoy is one that shows the pictures from the Hubble Space craft. This site has hyperlinks that explain all of the terms you see used by astronomers. It is updated in the form of a calendar with a new picture or information for each day. http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/calendar/allyears.html

You can click on the thumbnail pictures to enlarge them. This is a great site to send to your children and friends.

Marlin Johnson shared another site that will give the satellites positions and when they will come over us. It is www.heavens-above.com  You will find your latitude and longitude if you search as we did in class.

Keep bringing any questions you may have and web sites you would like to share so we can share the information together. We will look at making a calendar in our next session. Corinne
