Barron’s Bytes

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced)
Here’s an accessible and informative white hat hacker tool. Once installed, the Baseline Security Analyzer probes your PC from the Web. It detects patchable holes in the OS and alerts you to any available updates and fixes. We were thrilled to see that the MBSA notes lax password policies, poor security settings in IE and Outlook, and where drive shares are in force on your PC. It also has detailed instructions for plugging most of these holes. This freebie almost makes up for all of the money we’ve pumped into Microsoft . . . almost. (Freeware)

CPUBench 4.0.0.6 (Useful for our gurus who have recently built a computer)
This quick and easy benchmark humbles you and your CPU by running the processor through a dozen sprints and comparing the results to a long list of specific motherboards, CPUs, and PC models. Unlike some other benchmarks, this one is very straightforward and quick, and it uses a wide range of test processes. (Freeware)

New Users Lesson, By Corinne Higbee

The beginners have been looking at different sites on the internet. Art Kime shared this site with us and we looked at an old picture of the Bentsen Grove area. The site is www.acme.com/mapper.

Jim Oberg has a web site that discusses the space program and the work being done on the Columbia recovery. It is www.jamesoberg.com

For those of you interested in beautiful photography there is http://www.pbase.com/lbrandt79/root&view=recent

A galley of photos can be found here from all around the world.

Hope Jones sends these sites http://www.foulds2000.freeserve.co.uk/index_v2.html

We are checking sites to reserve for next years computer club eat outs. Lin's Chinese buffet said they can accommodate one hundred; and the cost is 5.49 for seniors plus drinks are extra.

The food is very good and looks like a good choice. Keep coming with your suggestions for us to check out.

We recommended that all have the AdWare 6 program downloaded and used after you have been on the internet. It will keep you from getting spam mail because you are being tracked moving around the internet. These files and materials dropped into your registery can be easily removed and save space on your computer. You can get this free program by going to www.google.com and doing a search for AdWare.

We also recommended that you get the program End It All and download it to your computer.

This is also a free program that will allow you to close all of the programs running in the background when you want to download programs form the internet or do a defrag. Go to Google again and do a search for EndItAll.

You should defrag once a month. Go to Start, Programs, Accessories and then System tools and disc clean up. Run the program , to remove the materials in the recycle bin , and close the program. Repeat the steps to the System Tools and Defrag. Running these programs should be done at the end of the day when you are through using the computer.

We will go over the making of CD's on Monday and answer any questions you want to ask.

See you Monday. Corinne
