Goodbye To Those Who Are Leaving

Every day we lose more of our winter computer club members and other friends. Though we are sad to see you go we wish you Godspeed and hope your journeys will be full of happiness. We hope to see you all next year. As a consolation for those of us who remain here we will now be able to find a parking space when we go to HEB or Wal-mart.

Thanks To Those Who Serve

I would like to thank all who have supported our club this year. I know that Harold is mentioning several people by name in this issue, and I sincerely second Harold’s thanks to those. But I doubt he is including himself and no one does more for the club than he does. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank Harold. Harold Buechly is the Editor of our Club Bulletin, he is the Webmaster of our Web Site, he is the Leader of our Web Building SIG, and the maintainer of our club computer and our telephone lines. He jumps in with little notice and leads the General Meeting when I am unable to attend. And last but far from least he tries to assist everyone who calls him for help. Thank you Harold!

I would also like to thank all of our SIG leaders, our Emergency Response Team, and our (proverbial “too numerous to mention”) members who are always willing to help their friends and neighbors.

Browser Tip

If you use more than one browser, you will appreciate this tip from Sue Whitehouse of Emazing.com: If you want to make sure that your favorite browser is the default browser for your system, here's what you do.

In Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, choose Tools | Internet Options. When the Internet Options dialog box opens, click the Programs tab. Select the check box labeled "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser". Click OK and then restart Microsoft Internet Explorer.

In Netscape 6/7, choose Edit|Preferences. When the dialog opens, click Navigator in the "Category" list. Click Set Default Browser and then click OK to dismiss the dialog box.

In Opera 6, choose File|Preferences. When the dialog opens, click Default Browser and then select the check box labeled "Check if Opera is default browser on startup". Click OK to close the dialog box.

Al Lowe's Humor Site (FREE)
 http://www.allowe.com/download.htm
Blast from the past! I remember Al Lowe from the '80s Sierra Games he produced, especially the hilarious Leisure Suit Larry series. Those games were huge and took up several 5-1/4 inch diskettes. Today, they're a small download. The graphics are the same as what we remember and the playing value is unchanged (unless you're too into the flashy graphics and have never experienced Zork or other '80s PC games). Available for download are The Black Cauldron, Donald Duck's Playground, Winnie the Pooh, Mickey's Space Adventure, Troll's Tale, and others. The files have been tested on Win98 and XP; however, the biggest drawback is that you don't get to watch the screens draw themselves anymore since today's processors are too fast! On his site, Lowe also has music, sound effects, a jokes mailing list, and other tidbits available for a good laugh or a stroll down memory lane. Get a taste of PC history and stop by Al Lowe's corner.

Another exciting season is coming to a close. This is the last weekly bulletin this season. I plan to send out a bulletin the first week of each month during the summer if there are articles submitted for that month. The first summer bulletin will be sent out the first week of May covering articles submitted prior to April 30th. Please keep your e-mail address up to date. See UPDATE YOUR MEMBERSHIP at the bottom of this page.

As a club, we have had another successful year sharing our computer experiences. We have obtained an up to date computer to go along with the projector and screen which makes us very well equipped to make presentations.

We are blessed with a very dedicated leader who spends untold hours each week in preparing for meetings, making the presentation, and assisting members with computer problems throughout the week. It is so easy to take Val’s dedication for granted. When you get a chance you might let him know that we appreciate what he does for us.

Let us also remember the fine job Corinne does each week in the early session labeled New Users Lesson. She shares her experiences with us on a level that anyone can understand. Her presentations are open to all BG residents and offer a learning experience for all users. Just because this session is labeled New Users Lesson does not mean that an advanced computer user will not gain from attending. Corinne’s presentation offers ideas and procedures which we all gain from. Likewise the General Meeting offers methods and procedures everyone can use.

There is nothing in computing that is growing faster than digital photography. Thanks to the help received from Bill Wiese, many of our members were led in the right direction when purchasing equipment and learning how to use it. Bill opened up his house for up to 12 members twice a week and conducted the photography SIG.

Always there when needed is Pat Ingram. Pat operated the club computer during the meetings. We almost treated her like a slave, constantly giving orders to her, point here, click there, enter this or that. Thanks Pat!

We miss George and his guidance he has made available to us over the last few years. As you know, he is not planning to come back next year. Upon arrival home in Michigan he saw his family doctor. They did several tests and planning a procedure to make corrections scheduled April 2nd. This is to reduce the possibilities of future strokes.

It’s been suggested that we include an article in the summer bulletins on what is happening in general at the park. Wouldn’t it be great if someone would submit such an article each month to help keep us up to date?

Harold Buechly
