Barron’s Bytes

Whistling while I work:  (5-15-03)

As I write this I am enjoying some fine weather in Houston but by the time you read it I’ll be in the valley. The weekend before we left the valley Jan received her new Dell Dimension 8300 computer and an 18-inch digital flat panel monitor. As you can imagine, it was with mixed emotions that she left it to come to Houston to be with her mom on Mother’s Day.

The good news is that while here we went to two of Houston’s computer superstores (Fry’s and Micro Center) and got an Ethernet switch and an APC brand, 750 Volt-Ampere, uninterruptible power system (UPS).

As soon as we get back to the valley on May 23rd we will begin the task of networking all of the household computers, scanners, and printers together in a 100 mbps Ethernet wired hub so that each computer can use either of our printers, the scanner, and share files and a dial up connection. To ease the pain of this task I bought a copy of the book “Windows XP Home Networking” by Paul Thurrott from Barnes & Nobel.

Thirty years ago on May 22, 1973, Bob Metcalfe wrote a memo describing a way to transmit data from the early generation of personal computers to a new device--the laser printer. He called his multipoint data communications system Ethernet, and today it continues to dominate as the standard computer network interface. This is what Jan and I will be using to network our computers and peripherals.

Ramblings

I talked to BOBBIE HOPKINS recently and she and Clyde are doing OK. She still has not been able to get on line but plans to work it out somehow soon. I’ll pass along her e-mail address when I get it.

I also spoke with GEORGE KELLY this past week and he and Jan are doing OK. They are spending a lot of time landscaping around their house in Michigan.

Our club certainly misses both couples.

Many receive advice, few profit by it.
