Barron’s Bytes

By Val Barron

As I write this I once again find myself in HOT, HUMID, HOUSTON. If all goes as planned We will return to Bentsen Grove soon after the Independence Day holiday. It is much easier to concentrate on things that really matter (like web surfing) down there where there are not as many distractions like Fry’s Electronics, Micro-Center and Half-Price Books stores.

RV Travels

With the knowledge that several of our computer club members are traveling in their motor homes this summer, I would like to offer up this link to Cay Dickenson’s HOTLIST column that appeared in the Houston Chronicle recently called appropriately enough RV TRAVELS

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/tech/weekly/1964158

which offers up ten websites with titles like---Paws Travels, The RV Club, and, for your trip back to the Rio Grande Valley this fall Cay includes the Texas RV Directory & Guide. All 10 websites are interesting and useful. Some are very personal with pictures and music so be sure to have your speakers turned on. This was posted to the Chronicle’s website on June 24th and was up to date at that time.

Open With

While on the subject of the Houston Chronicle, the next day Jay Lee’s HELP LINE column reported a useful tip in response to a reader who asked:

“I recently installed Quicktime to view something on my computer, but after installing, it took over handling my images, such as JPGs and GIFs images, and added the Quicktime icon for all my stored pictures. How can I revert to the original programs?”

I’m sure we have all installed programs that hijack our preferences in this manner. Sometimes the installing program asks us if this is o.k. but more often it just changes it. You will find this information useful no matter which program happens to change your “open with” preferences. The answer to the above question is at

Val’s Five Star Award Winner

The following tip wins my award as the best tip for the first half of 2003.

You wouldn’t believe some of the hoops I have had to jump through when trying to paste from the web to my Bulletin column. Many times I have simply had to retype the whole thing.

Control What’s On Printed Web Pages

Want to change what gets printed on the bottom of the Web pages that you print using Internet Explorer? Easy. From within Internet Explorer, select File and then, Page Setup. You just need to enter special codes into the Header (what gets printed at the top of the page) and the Footer (what gets printed at the bottom of the page) boxes. For example, to have the Web page's address printed, you would enter "&u" without the quotes. You can combine codes, too. To see a list of codes, click on the question mark in the upper right corner in the Page Setup menu and then, click on either the Header or Footer box.

Sorry I forgot where this tip is from but I think it was from Kim Komando.

Next Season

One of the plans I am making for the coming season is an extensive series of tutorials in the bulletin that will address many of the concerns of all of our members regardless of skill level or Windows platform (Win 95, 98, ME, XP Home or XP Pro). Sorry you Windows 3.1 users but it’s time to upgrade!

Final Word

My thanks as always go to Harold Buechly for his steady hand at the editor’s keyboard. It is a time consuming and difficult job that Harold does exceptionally well. But please don’t blame him for my errors. I am aware that it may sometimes be confusing as to who contributes what to the Bulletin so here is a guide---If it falls between the header “Barron’s Bytes” and my signature “Val” then I have contributed the material and I am solely responsible for any errors of fact, spelling, grammar, bad links, or the like. I was reminded of the difficulty of keeping links sorted out when the editorial page of the New York Times had 3 or 4 bad links last Friday. However, I really try to make sure that all links are “live” and go where they are supposed to go. So take it easy on Harold if I (or another contributor) foul things up. Harold has the unenviable job of making the entire Bulletin look nice, sending it out to our members, and publishing it to our web site. Of course, Harold often contributes his own technical articles also.

Enjoy the summer,

Val
