Welcome Club Members To Another Fun Filled Season At Bentsen Grove Resort

Your computer club has big plans for an interesting and informative year. But, before discussing the new season I would like to do a quick historical review. Going back a very few years the club was meeting and talking about computing without a computer even being in the room. Then after a while we graduated to having a 17 inch monitor on the front table for those lucky enough to have a front row seat. We also tried, not very successfully, to use a TV projector in the north hall.

As our membership grew we were thrilled when the park bought us a high quality computer projector and we were able to start beginner lessons with a small borrowed portable screen and an inexpensive p.a. system. Year before last with your own club dues we bought a large commercial grade pull down screen. Finally, this past year with your club dues we bought a fast new computer. Not much new hardware seems needed anytime soon except possibly an upgraded sound system.

As the club has grown not everyone's interest could be fully addressed in the beginner lessons and general meeting so enter the SIGs or Special Interest Groups. These have varied from one time special meetings such as buying and selling on EBay to an all season once or twice a week SIG on Digital Photography. These SIGs can come and go as members and leaders interest dictate.

So with a fairly mature club and no pressing physical needs such as facilities or equipment what does this year have in store for us? As the saying goes, I'm glad you asked that!

In the next paragraph I'll outline my plans for the General Meeting. Perhaps Corinne our Beginner Teacher will discuss her plans. Also, it would be nice if our SIG leaders would send along a paragraph or two about their plans.

General Meeting Plans

Continuing with past tradition there will be plenty of time for Question and Answer, Show and Tell, Guest speakers, etc. That Brings us to....

What's Are The New Plans For This Season?

Each week in the bulletin I plan to run a tutorial that might run somewhere between 1 and 3 printed pages. This will be an "easy reader" but will basically aimed at the intermediate level computer user. I plan for it to be easy enough for the novice to understand and still have plenty of nuggets for our advanced users.

At the following club meeting I will then go over and elaborate on the concepts presented in the previous bulletin. It is my hope and belief that this will, with a little effort on each of our parts, help us increase our understanding of computing. These tutorials will apply equally to all Windows 9x systems, that is, Windows 95, 98, ME, and XP. They will also be useful for anyone using Windows NT or Windows 2000.

Because I will not be at the November 10th club meeting, the first tutorial will appear in the Bulletin about November 12th. For next week's bulletin I will list and explain the topics I plan to present during the current season

I'm looking forward to the new season and hope you are too!

Happy Computing,

Val

T’N’T TIPS AND TECHNIQUES By Harold Buechly harold@buechly.com

Awesomenet

The BG Computer Club has used Awesomenet for dial up service for use during the meeting and a place to keep our web page (www.bgrcc.com ). It is our hope that having this ISP will cost the club nothing, ‘free’, ‘zip’, ‘0’. Every time one of our members sets up with Awesomenet as a new customer, they will credit our account $9.95. That will pay one month of their service to the club. Anyone signing up with them may tell them when they sign up that they were referred to Awesomenet by customer #18741. If Awesomenet is not told this while they sign up we will not be credited.

Their monthly fee is $9.95, 3 months $27.95, 6 months $49.95 or annually for $99.95 and there is no set up charge. Credit card is not required, they will bill you by E-mail. As with any ISP, if and when you discontinue service with them they must be notified prior to the date you want to stop their service.

Charles Jones is the regional manager located at 3525 N. 10th, McAllen, 664-2233 to set up.

FIREWALL By Claude Westfall

Your PC should be protected when you go on line to help keep it free of intruders. Windows XP has a built in Internet Connection Firewall that will help and can be turned on. Follow these steps. Open Control Panel and double click Network Connection. Right click on the dial-up or broadband connection that you are using. Select Properties and click Advanced tab. Check the box that reads "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet."

Note: A firewall such as Zone Alarm or Norton will give you better protection. Be sure to keep your OS and antivirus software up to date.

Question:

I got an e-mail from Microsoft that said to install this patch immediately.  Well,  Norton said that the "patch"  contained a virus and they deleted it!  Was I shocked!  Maybe I didn't read Norton right?

Answer:

Microsoft doesn’t send out e-mails with attachments warning of virus or instructing you to run the attached programs. This e-mail came from one of your dear friends without their knowledge. Norton was right. It did contain an attachment with an executable program called patch.exe. If Norton had not caught this and you ran this patch, your computer would have been infested with a Trojan called W32.Dumaru@mm which would send itself out to all those in your address book and infest their computers.
