Barron’s Bytes

By Val Barron valbarron@att.net

Fusion

As of today (2-25-04) I have been home from the hospital for a week. I’m recuperating from a spinal fusion/bone graft and doing very well. I have outpatient physical therapy three days a week for at the next three weeks. I also have follow up visits scheduled with my surgeon, internal medicine doctor, and cardiologist. Unfortunately I find that working at this computer I am unable to get proper back support and it is tiring. As a result today’s Barron’s Bytes will be brief.

Browsers

Those of us that use an isp rather than an online service such as AOL, MSN, or Compuserve almost all surf the web with Microsoft’s browser—Internet Explorer. A few of us might also use Netscape. These browsers have served us pretty well, but with age they have become slow and bloated.

There are a number of next generation browsers, however, that are in beta or even full release. Based on reviews I have decided to give up Internet Explorer and try FIREFOX 0.8. As you can tell from the Version number, 0.8, FIREFOX is still in beta but it is reported to be fast and small (6 megabytes) with advanced features. It is also reported to be very stable—not always a feature of beta releases.

I had hoped to be using it by now and reporting on my experiences with it, but my limited time at the computer has precluded this. Instead I will provide a link to a brief Houston Chronicle review at:

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/tech/weekly/2411542

A Forbes magazine review is at:

http://forbes.com/infoimaging/2004/02/04/cx_ah_0204tentech.html

Maxim PC Magazine had a review in January or February but I can’t get back to those issues on the web. Most of the other reviews are on Unix related sites so I’ll skip them.

The download site is at:

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

And contains much additional information. So give it a try if you like or wait for my own evaluation to appear next week. I plan to download it tonight or Thursday and begin using it.

Happy browsing,

Val Barron

               and Paths.

           3. Click Change and select an unused letter from the drop-down list and click OK.
