It is getting very quiet at Bentsen Grove. Most of our Winter Texans have departed for “back home”. For some of us though “back home” is right here and the quiet is a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the winter season. We can begin to work on those projects that we didn’t have time for during the season. Some of us will want to use at least some of the time to take it easy and just relax. In that vein, beginning with this issue, the Bulletin now begins to relax and will be published just once a month. One of the topics I would like to talk about this summer is my favorite search engine, Google. Todays topic is the Google Toolbar. Google ToolbarOne of the most useful aspects of the web is the ability to do a search on any topic that comes to mind. Over time Google has become the preeminent search engine on the web. A product of the folks at Google is the Google Toolbar which I have been using for many months. The toolbar is a quick download from http://toolbar.google.com that installs a text entry field and a row of buttons just under the URL field at the top of Internet Explorer. No matter where you are on the Web, all you have to do is type your search term into the text entry field and either press "Enter" or click the "Search" button -– and up pop your results. In addition to basic searching, you can add buttons to
your toolbar for quick access to all the searches you use regularly: Google
Groups or Google Images, for example. Or you can add the Combined Search
Button, which gives you one click access to all of the searches, from Google
News to the If that's not handy enough for you, the toolbar also includes a slew of other useful features, and you can customize your toolbar to include whichever ones you prefer. Among my favorites: SITE SEARCH: You can add a button to the toolbar that will search the entire domain of the Web page your browser is on for whatever terms you enter. I find this particularly handy for sites that don't have their own search feature (and for those that do, I often find the Google search more effective.) PAGE INFO: Quick access to similar pages, pages that link back to that page, and Google's cached snapshot of the page. HIGHLIGHT: The "Highlight" button automatically colors all of your search terms on the Web page, so you can easily find the words you searched for (each word is a different color). WORD FIND: Words you searched for appear at the right of the tool bar. Click on them and the page scrolls right to them, saving you the tedious trouble of using the browser's find feature and retyping the words. NEXT and PREVIOUS: These buttons allow you to navigate quickly among the results from your last search. For example, you might perform a search and click the first result link and surf around for a while, then click the "Next" button to see the second result. I’M FEELING LUCKY: And yes, you can add the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button to the toolbar. Don't you feel lucky now? Happy summer computing, Val Barron |

Keep your hard
drive organized By Harold Buechly You can find documents if you put them in My Documents folder, likewise music in My Music, pictures in My Pictures etc. It also makes it easy to make a backup of your data easily and complete. If a folder name begins with “My”, it contains folders and files that you created and you are totally responsible to back it up and maintain it. You can create a folder within a folder to organize your data. Example: Within My Documents create a folder named Health, within the Health folder create folders called Blood Tests, Blood Pressure, Health Insurance, Letters to Doctors or whatever works for you. When you create a new document and go to save it you are given an opportunity to name it, select a place to save it, create a new folder and what format it is to be saved in. If the document is brand new you may click on File then on Save or Save As. Within the Save As screen you may select what folder to save in at the top of the box. If you want to create a new folder click on the icon that looks like a file folder to the right, near the top of the box. New Folder will appear ready to rename, just start typing the new name for the folder. Just click on the new folder and it appears in the Save In box at the top of the screen. Next enter the name you want to assign to the document in the File Name box near the bottom of the screen. There also is a box labeled Save As Type near the bottom of the screen. Normally you would accept the default type for the program you are using but under certain conditions you may want to save as a different type file. In Word Pad you may be given a selection of 3 or 4 types of file. In Word or Excel, a selection of +- 20 types. In a picture editing program +- 15. That is where the 3 or 4 letters following the file name is set. (.txt, .doc, .jpg, .html etc.). |
