BGRCC Bulletin for Feb 1, 2010

This weeks handout, 02/01/10, will be on Lesson 4 by Corinne. If you have a printer, please make your own copy. The lessons are found at our web page, www.bgrcc.com .Bookmark or save to your favorites our web page. Go to Lessons by Corinne and you can copy the Lessons from this page.

Gary Bernier is going to talk about Maintenance on you computer and work with the programs that you need to use to keep your computer safe. There has been problem with Trojans getting on peoples computers. This can be because you have not done the updates on your spy ware program or run it weekly. Another problem is if the anti virus has not updated because you already have a Trojan on your laptop. We found a cure to this by downloading a paid version to remove the problems. This worked in the instance of the HiJacker Trojan. The paid version of Bit Defender or AVG 9.0 are strong enough to prevent this problem if you are not running Ad-Aware or Spy Bot Search and Destroy programs regularly. John Abbott highly recommends Stopzilla as the best for removing spy ware off your computer if you are running a free anti-virus program. You have to buy this program but it keeps your computer safe from spy ware by using it weekly. They have a free version but it would not work as fast or as well as the paid version. Click here to check out Stopzilla.
You can find the download at net below. When you download a program to your computer you have to install it for it to run. Be sure you are downloading from a legitimate place. Here are a few that are safe to download from. Click here for major geeks. Click here for downloads at cnet: http://download.cnet.com/windows/
Here is a quick review for those of you who need it on installing your download. When you download, be sure you save the download to your desktop. When it ask you to download it can go in your documents if you do not specify the desktop. If the window has doc. in the top address bar, there is a down arrow at the end of the bar, you can click on and the down menu and it will show desktop on it. Be sure and click on desktop for the address bar. Now you can click on the download bar and when it is complete you can close out the page and go to your desktop and look for the setup icon. Click on the setup Icon and a wizard will display and help you install the program. The program will give you an icon on your desktop and you can then remover the setup portion to your trash basket by clicking and dragging it and dropping it there. Now click on the program or application icon, to run the program.

We need more volunteers to help with the beginners one on one lessons on Monday,Wednesday and Friday. Anita is gone and Doug and Gary were ill so I had it all to myself on Friday. Everyone was patient and got the help they needed. Hopefully we will have more people to help out this next week.

The 15th of February is our luncheon out at Concita's Kitchen. It is close by and serves Mexican and American foods. If you need directions we will be glad to provide them on the 15th. No tutorials on this Monday.

Beginners begin setting up at 8:30 and the lesson begins at 9:00. The general session begins at 10:30 and is over at 11:40. We break for lunch and begin the Tutorials at 12-1 on Monday,Wednesday and Friday.
